The Awkward Elevator Ride

At the risk of revealing just how simple my mind is, this is something that i've wondered about for a while. It hasn't consumed my thoughts or anything, but it is something I've pondered regardless.

Why is that elevator ride with 2 strangers so awkward?

There ya go. Now you see just how deep my thought process is. But it is an interesting question. We've all been there. Alone with a stranger in an elevator. That seemingly eternal time it takes to get from the floor you started to the floor your going, all the while in a confined space with a person you don't know from Adam. Some of us have even walked up eight flights of stairs to avoid it.

Now, I consider myself a pretty friendly person, making friends easily and feeling pretty comfortable in most social circumstances. However, there's just something about that elevator ride that just makes me think I would rather have a root canal.

As I said, we've all been there. All kinds of things are going through your mind. Don't make eye contact. Don't stare. Don't smell. Look cool. You might say "hello", but that's about as far as any conversation goes. We spend time with strangers everyday without all the angst that accompanies this situation. Then why is the elevator ride so awkward?

It may have something to do with the fact that there's no escape. What if this person is Ted Bundy reincarnated, and has the intention of doing great harm to my person??? I hear your scoffing... STOP! You don't know that he's NOT! :)

Well, other than just pure paranoia and weird human behavior, I have no explanation. Any ideas from you guys? I welcome your comments, even if you want to do nothing but tell me I'm nutso and that I should get out of the blogging biz altogether. I can handle it. Really.

You better just hope that you're never alone with me on an elevator.
